Lecture IntroductionSince the reform and opening-up, China has undergone the largest-scale and fastest-paced urbanization process in world history. By the end of 2024, the urbanization rate of permanent residents had reached 67.00%, marking a 55.52 percentage point increase compared to 1949. While urban development and urbanization construction have achieved globally remarkable accomplishments, they have also amplified demands for energy, mineral resources, food, and water, while giving rise to environmental challenges such as carbon emissions, air pollution, and overburdened waste management systems.

This lecture will present China's urban sustainability roadmap through insights from four key research domains: industrial symbiosis and waste management, regional environmental impact assessment, green transition strategies, and mineral resource management. The discussion aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on balancing urban growth with ecological preservation in developing economies.
